Thompson, Manitoba

For the rural municipality see Thompson, Manitoba (rural municipality)

Thompson, Manitoba is a city in Manitoba. It is one of the main cities of northern Manitoba, and is located approximately 800 km north of Winnipeg and 400 km from The Pas. As of the 2001 census, Thompson had a population of 13,256.

The history of Thompson begins only in 1956 when a major nickel ore discovery was made in the area. INCO built a large mining and smelting operation during the 1960's and helped create the community of Thompson to house it's employees. Thompson was incorporated as a city in 1967, on Canada's Millenium Anniversary. Now the largest city in Northern Manitoba, it is referred to as "The Hub of the North".

Thompson contains one of the two main campuses of the University College of the North.

Its most prominent local industry is nickel mining. Many Federal, Provincial, and Aboriginal government agencies have offices in Thompson. The aviation sector is also quite busy as Thompson boosts the 3rd busiest airport in Manitoba.
