Peter Lombard

Peter Lombard (c. 1100May 3, 1160 in Paris) was a scholastic philosopher and bishop of the 12th century.

He was born in Lumellogno, near Novara, Italy to a poor family, but the patronage of St. Bernard allowed him to study at Bologna, Reims, and Paris. He later became a professor at the school of Notre Dame in Paris.

In 1159, he became Bishop of Paris.

Lombard was very involved in the elaboration of the doctrine of the Trinity. His most famous work is Libri quatuor sententiarum or Sentences, which has been very influential on the work of Albertus Magnus, Bonaventure, Thomas Aquinas, and Duns Scotus. His philosophical approach was heavily influenced by Pierre Abélard.
