Normanton is a town in West Yorkshire, England, lying north east of Wakefield and south west of Castleford.
Normanton was originally surrounded by a moat. A grammar school was founded in Normanton in the 1590s, but the town remained very small until it became the focus of several railway lines in the mid-nineteenth century and coal mining was begun.
The town is one of the few small places in Yorkshire to retain a very distinctive accent. Locals still talk of a "Normanton accent" as opposed to one from Wakefield or other surrounding towns.
