John Loewen (born December 21, 1949) is a politician in Manitoba, Canada. He is currently a member of the Manitoba legislature.
Loewen was born in Elkhorn , Manitoba, and received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Manitoba in 1973. He worked for Comcheq Services Ltd. between 1972 and 1998, and served as the organization's President and CEO from 1984 to 1998. He was also a cabinet member of the United Way for several years, and was a chair of the Manitoba Entertainment Complex Group during the mid-1990s. There are some who blame Loewen for the departure of the Winnipeg Jets hockey franchise from the city, due to his actions in the latter capacity (he was unwilling to use legal gambling ventures to raise money for the team).
Loewen entered political life in Manitoba's 1999 provincial election, being elected for the southwestern Winnipeg riding of Fort Whyte. A Progressive Conservative, Loewen defeated New Democrat Bidhu Jha by 6480 votes to 2815. The provincial election was won by the New Democrats, and Loewen became an opposition MLA.
Loewen was re-elected in the 2003 election, by a slightly reduced margin. In late 2003, he introduced a bill to eliminate Video Lottery Terminals in the province.
